NTT Nears $6.3 Billion Osaka Data Center Deal for Anthropic

NTT Data is in final-stage talks on a roughly $6.3 billion data center deal in Osaka, Japan, designed to supply 500 megawatts of capacity to support Anthropic’s growing compute needs, with both companies reportedly targeting a signing date of March 31.

Scale of the Facility

A 500 megawatt data center ranks among the larger single-site AI infrastructure projects announced to date, reflecting the scale of compute that frontier AI labs now require to train and run their models. For comparison, facilities in this power range are typically associated with major hyperscale cloud campuses rather than standard enterprise data centers, underscoring how much AI-specific infrastructure has grown in scale over a short period.

Why Japan and Why NTT

NTT is one of Japan’s largest telecommunications and infrastructure companies, with deep experience building and operating large-scale data centers domestically. An Osaka location would give Anthropic additional geographic diversification for its compute footprint, reducing reliance on US-based infrastructure and potentially improving service latency and resilience for Asian customers and partners, including any future commercial or research relationships in the region.

Part of a Broader Compute Buildout

The Osaka deal would add to Anthropic’s expanding infrastructure footprint, which has grown alongside the company’s commercial growth and reported plans for a public listing targeting a valuation above $2 trillion. Like other frontier AI labs, Anthropic has increasingly turned to partnerships with established infrastructure and telecommunications companies to secure the power and data center capacity needed to train and serve its models, rather than building every facility independently.

What Remains Uncertain

As of the reporting, the deal remains in final-stage talks rather than signed, meaning terms could still change before the targeted March 31 signing date. If completed, the Osaka facility would represent one of the largest dedicated AI data center investments tied to a single AI lab announced in the region to date, adding to a global wave of multibillion-dollar AI infrastructure commitments from NTT, Nvidia, Microsoft, and other major technology and telecommunications companies.
